Kroeschell - Managing Risk More Easily with ClickSafety

For 127 years, Kroeschell, Inc. has been a leader in mechanical and electrical engineering. The company installs, constructs, and services industrial heating and air conditioning systems for customers that range from Caterpillar and the Archdiocese of Chicago to Abbott Labs and the U.S. Air Force. Managing the risk to its employees requires Kroeschell to maintain a rigorous safety training program. Before implementing ClickSafety, the company relied on logistics heavy, classroom-style training programs that pulled employees away from projects during the peak business season. Now, Kroeschell’s employees complete many of their training requirements between projects, when business is slower. In addition, thanks to ClickSafety, Kroeschell no longer manages its safety training program using spreadsheets, a time-consuming and manual process.

The Challenge:
Untangling Safety Logistics

Although meeting the safety requirements of customers and regulations has always been a priority, Kroeschell’s devotion to safety is internally-driven. “We’re determined to provide a safe and healthy workplace for our employees,” says David Stavropoulos, Corporate Risk Manager for Kroeschell. As part of its safety program, Kroeschell conducted extensive classroom training six times a year in addition to weekly safety updates. Scheduling these was often a huge endeavor. “On any given day, we could have over a hundred different jobs where anywhere from one to over a hundred people were working,” explains Stavropoulos. “Trying to coordinate times for 350 employees to come in was problematic.”

While some training was carried out during normal work hours, longer courses, such as OSHA 10-hour and OSHA 30-hour classes, were conducted over the weekend. “Not too many of our employees were happy about that,” adds Stavropoulos. Furthermore, to keep on top of training requirements, Kroeschell had to schedule training sessions all year round, even during the peak times.

By adopting ClickSafety, Kroeschell, Inc. has been able to:

Train employees at slow, rather than peak, times of the year

Respond quickly to customer demands for OSHA 10-trained workers

Extend OSHA 10 training to all core employees

Spend less time managing its safety training program

Impress customers with its Kroeschell-branded online university

The Solution:
Streamlined Training and Management

With ClickSafety, Kroeschell no longer struggles to coordinate the schedules of its 500 employees. Stavropoulos simply assigns employees courses and they can complete them over time. “Instead of tying workers up during productive times of year, we can do a lot of safety training during the sluggish winter months,” says Stavropoulos. “We’re a lot more efficient now.” While the company still does some classroom-style training, Kroeschell depends on the wide variety of courses ClickSafety provides to conduct much of its safety training. “The fact that ClickSafety had exactly the courses we need was a big selling point for us.”

Because it’s so much easier to safety train employees using ClickSafety, Kroeschell has been able to expand its training goals. Whereas once the company gave only supervisors OSHA 10 training, Kroeschell is now intent on providing the course to all its core employees. “Customers like the OSHA 10 because it assures them that the employee has a certain level of competency when it comes to safety,” says Stavropoulos. “ClickSafety has made providing OSHA 10 training to our core employees a reachable goal. It’s helped us from a marketing standpoint.” Furthermore, if a customer requests that all workers on a job have OSHA 10 training, Kroeschell can quickly respond. “We can assign training to workers and they can get it done quickly. I do not have to hire a third-party vendor or drop everything to
conduct training.”

Not only is conducting training easier with ClickSafety, Kroeschell has also streamlined the management of its safety program. “Everything used to be monitored manually on spreadsheets,” says Stavropoulos. “The logistics of trying to track training for hundreds of employees was time consuming and effort intensive. Now, I can manage the program easily by tracking and assigning training online.”

The Results:
Happier Employees, Satisfied Customers

With ClickSafety in its safety training arsenal, Kroeschell has improved its ability to train employees efficiently. Employees are happier that they can conduct training during slow times, rather than at peak times of the year—or on weekends. ClickSafety has also made it possible for Kroeschell to set its sights on a new goal: Providing hundreds of its core
employees with OSHA 10 training, not just a handful of supervisors. Not only are customers pleased that Kroeschell can respond quickly to demands for OSHA 10-trained workers, they are also impressed with the company’s online university. “It gives our
training program a higher level of sophistication,” says Stavropoulos. In addition, seasonal workers no longer receive a safety handbook upon arrival at the job. They take a ClickSafety orientation course, allowing Kroeschell to document their safety instruction more automatically.

Managing the logistics of its safety training program is no longer the headache it once was. “I spend less time tracking training and it’s easier to do now,” says Stavropoulos. Explaining the impact ClickSafety has had on Kroeschell, Stavropoulos sums it up this way: “Managing our risk requires that we train our employees and comply with industry regulations so that we can reduce our overall incidents. ClickSafety has significantly impacted our overall risk management program.”
