| Webcor Builders Trains
Hundreds More Workers with ClickSafety |
| |
 |
|
Over the last thirty years,
California-based Webcor Builders has constructed
many of California’s landmark commercial,
residential, and office buildings. With clients
ranging from The Home Depot and Oracle to Ronald
McDonald House and Boeing, Webcor’s growth has
exploded in recent years, resulting in an influx of
new employees. Concurrently, government regulations
and increased industry awareness has made safety
training a top priority. To underscore its
commitment to keeping workers safe as well as reduce
the time and costs associated with safety training,
Webcor turned to ClickSafety. |

The Challenge:
Training Workers Faster
|
More than ever before, construction
companies are under pressure to effectively train
both employees and subcontractors on safety.
Cal/OSHA requires safety training for employees, and
new laws such as AB-1127 hold contractors
responsible for the safety of onsite subcontractors.
Adding to the regulatory incentives to train workers
is Webcor’s own company culture, one that puts
employee safety at the forefront. The price for not complying with Cal/OSHA safety
regulations can be high.
Before adopting ClickSafety, Webcor had to send its
employees offsite to week-long OSHA 10-hour and
OSHA30-hour compliance courses. In addition, when
Webcor analyzed its accidents, it became clear that
most happened to employees on the job less than six
months—an issue compounded by Webcor’s rapid growth
and increased pace of hiring. |
|
Using ClickSafety training
solutions, Webcor has been able to:
Increase the number of workers Cal/OSHA trained
from a handful to hundreds
Eliminate week-long, offsite OSHA training for
safety managers
Shift jobsite safety training responsibilities
away from busy superintendents
Maintain incident and severity rates that are
drastically below industry averages
Save over 40 employee hours a week on its ‘Pride
of Work’ incentive program |

The Solution:
Online, Anytime Training
|
|
By adopting ClickSafety’s OSHA training courses, the
first 100% web-based 10-hour and 30-hour construction
safety courses authorized by OSHA for issuing course
completion cards, Webcor workers can meet OSHA
requirements. |
Webcor not only offers its employees OSHA training
courses, but virtually every safety training course
in ClickSafety’s extensive library. ClickSafety
courses are made available to Webcor employees
through an online university that reinforces
Webcor’s commitment to worker safety. In addition,
the course making the biggest impact, the jobsite
orientation program that ClickSafety developed
especially for Webcor, is available at jobsite
kiosks. The course includes a core safety
orientation as well as jobsite specific hazard
information designed to keep workers safe. By
providing the onsite training orientation to new
workers, Webcor has enhanced its ability to significantly reduce incidents for workers on the job fewer
than six months. |
|
“We are able to document that everyone has been through the course, so we know that we’re doing everything possible to keep workers safe. The superintendents are happy because it takes a lot of pressure off them, and the supervisors like it because guys fill out paperwork and take their orientation course and drug test in one stop. It’s been a huge success”

New employees and subcontractors simply use laptops
with headphones to take the course. They must achieve
100% on the test to receive their hardhat stickers,
helping to ensure that every worker onsite is prepared.
The Letterman Digital Arts Center project was the first
to use the jobsite orientation program that was
available in English and Spanish—and the feedback was
positive. “Few people needed help because the course is
so easy to navigate,” says Nicole Leifeld, training
coordinator at Webcor. “We are able to document that
everyone has been through the course, so we know that
we’re doing everything possible to keep workers safe.
The superintendents are happy because it takes a lot of
pressure off them, and the supervisors like it because
guys fill out paperwork and take their orientation
course and drug test in one stop. It’s been a huge
success.”
Looking ahead, Webcor has turned to ClickSafety for help
with its Pride of Work incentive program. Webcor and
subcontractor foremen fill out daily checklists noting
how well workers did that week. If, as a group, the
workers receive 92% or higher on the checklist, they all
get a $10 credit they can redeem at The Work Wear Store,
the largest online retailer of Carhartt construction
work wear.
ClickSafety is managing the incentive portion of the
Pride of Work program for Webcor. Every week, a
communication is sent by ClickSafety to all the Webcor
and subcontractor employees involved on the jobsite.
When it’s time to honor the participants, Webcor can
award the incentive with the click of a button. |

The Results:
Hundreds More Trained |
| |
| Since it implemented the ClickSafety approach,
Webcor has maintained incident and severity rates that
are drastically below industry averages. The onsite
jobsite orientation has shifted training responsibility
away from busy superintendents, while giving Webcor
peace of mind that even subcontractors are well prepared
to start work safely. Over 4,600 workers have completed
the jobsite orientation course to date, and the number
grows every day. Thanks to ClickSafety, the number of
workers the company has CAL-OSHA |
| |
|
trained has increased from a handful
to over a hundred because workers |
 |
|
no longer have to set aside a week
to complete it. What’s more, by offering training
through ClickSafety, Webcor is confident that all
workers—including subcontractors—are receiving a
consistent message. Explains Gregg Davis, senior
vice president/CIO at Webcor, “It’s vitally
important that all workers receive the same
training. Your life depends not only on your
actions, but on those of the workers around you.
With ClickSafety, we can control the message and be
certain that it’s delivered consistently 100% of the
time.”
With the explosive growth Webcor is experiencing,
having a training program that gets workers up to
speed quickly and cost effectively is a huge asset.
The Pride of Work incentive program alone is saving
the company over 40 hours of employee time a week.
Customers are pleased that Webcor has such a robust
safety training program, especially when it comes to
projects in sensitive areas. “Our safety program is
a big selling point with the owners,” explains
Davis. “One client wanted to make sure that every
worker received a consistent message about the
historical significance of the jobsite. They were
ecstatic that we have a program that was proven to
do just that.”
Concludes Davis, “ClickSafety has allowed us to have
a clear, consistent,
and efficient training program while keeping our
costs down.” |
