Five Tips to Beat the Heat

Now that the Summer is upon us, heat-related safety issues take a front seat. Many people work outside and are exposed to high temperatures in their day-to-day jobs. Excessive exposure can cause skin burns, heat stroke, cramps, rashes, or even death. Workers can also experience other heat-related injuries due to sweaty hands, dizziness, or foggy safety glasses.

Be sure you know the signs of illness and what you can do to keep yourself safe in the sun.

  1. Drink plenty of water. Make sure you drink water at least every hour, even if you do not feel thirsty. Avoid drinks with caffeine or alcohol.
  2. Wear lightweight, loose-fitting clothes if possible and avoid dark colors as they absorb the sun’s rays.
  3. Be sure to put on your sunblock. Even those of us with darker skin tones are susceptible to damage from the sun’s rays.
  4. Take breaks in the shade as often as possible. And see tip #1!
  5. Know the signs of heat-related illness. These can include dizziness, heavy sweating, headache, nausea, and cramps. Be sure to look for these signs in coworkers too.
