HAZWOPER

OSHA’s Hazard Communication Standard requires employers to provide their workers with training regarding potential hazards of chemicals on the jobsite. ClickSafety’s HAZWOPER training online is designed to prepare workers to understand their role in managing an emergency of hazardous substance so they can respond in a safe manner.

HAZWOPER STANDARDS

The standards include anyone who is exposed or potentially exposed to hazardous materials and who are engaged in one of the following operations (as specified by 1910.120(a)(1)(i-v) and 1926.65(a)(1)(i-v):

  1. Government-required clean-up operations
  2. Corrective actions covered by the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act of 1976 (RCRA)
  3. Voluntary clean-up operations at uncontrolled hazardous waste sites
  4. Operations at Treatment, storage, and disposal facilities (TSDF) which involve hazardous waste
  5. Emergency response operations where there is a threat involving the release of hazardous substances

ADDITIONAL WORKERS TO PROTECT

HAZWOPER training can also be useful for anyone looking to protect workers in any of the following hazardous working conditions:

  • High concentrations of toxic substances
  • Environments considered Immediately Dangerous to Life and Health (IDLH)
  • Situations that pose the risk of a fire or explosion
  • Oxygen-deficient atmospheres

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

WHAT DOES HAZWOPER STAND FOR?

HAZWOPER is an acronym that stands for “hazardous waste operations and emergency response”. HAZWOPER training requirements are covered under the OSHA Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response (HAZWOPER) standards 29 CFR 1910.120 and 29 CFR 1926.65.

WHO NEEDS HAZWOPER TRAINING?

HAZWOPER training is required for workers who perform cleanup, emergency response, corrective actions or operate at treatment facilities. These include:

  • Government-required cleanup operations
  • Corrective actions involving cleanup operations at sites covered by the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA)
  • Clean-up operations at uncontrolled hazardous waste sites
  • Operations at treatment, storage, and disposal (TSD) facilities
  • Emergency response operations involving the release of hazardous substances

WHICH HAZWOPER CERTIFICATION IS RIGHT FOR ME?

  • HAZWOPER 24-Hour is an initial 24 hours of training that meets the training requirements mandated by 29 CFR 1910.120(e) for workers and employers who have limited exposure to hazardous materials.
  • HAZWOPER 16-Hour is intended for professionals who need to complete their 40 hours of training and have already successfully passed their initial HAZWOPER 24-hour course.
  • HAZWOPER 40-Hour is designed for all workers and employers participating in hazardous waste operations.
  • HAZWOPER 8-Hour Refresher is intended for workers and employers who have taken prior 24- and 40-hour HAZWOPER certification training. This refresher course meets the annual training requirement for hazardous waste operations and emergency response workers.

HOW DO I GET A HAZWOPER CERTIFICATE?

OSHA’s HAZWOPER standard requires that all individuals receive a physical HAZWOPER certificate upon successful completion of their 8-, 24-, and/or 40-hour HAZWOPER training.

To receive a certificate, participants must successfully complete their HAZWOPER training online with ClickSafety and receive a minimum score of 70% at each of the knowledge checkpoints and complete the required course evaluation form. Once completed, a classroom certificate will be awarded to the attendee. The student will still need to attend a field exercise session with their employer to meet OSHA requirements.
